Walking Schedule 2010

Breathing Space Outdoors, based in picturesque Comrie, Perthshire, offers walking from

gentle, low level to high level and everything in between. Experienced local guides with

knowledge of the local environment and history lead the walks. Nordic walking is also

now available.

High level walking

High level guided walking that takes us through mountain passes and over some local tops and 'munros'( mountains over 3000 feet high) letting you sample beautiful scenery and wild places. In the autumn, there is a chance to see and hear the unforgettable sound of stags gathering for the annual rut. We will move off the beaten track taking less traveled routes up the mountains ensuring we are far from the madding crowds.

Gentle to intermediate

Enjoy walking in beautiful countryside through ancient oak woodlands, past lovely waterfalls and lochs.  There is time to explore the natural history of the area looking at the geology, geography, flora, fauna and wildlife as well as considering the social history of the area. There is also time to stop for coffee at the end of a walk.

These are shorter days of walking

What is Nordic walking?

Nordic walking is fitness walking using specially designed walking poles.

Originating in Finland – as a way for cross-country skiers to train in summer, Nordic walking has taken off all over Europe. The nordic fitness craze isset to take off in Britain too.

Nordic walking exercises the whole body using 90% of the muscles in the body and can burn over 45%  more calories than ordinary walking.   The upper body gets a workout with the big muscles around the shoulders, neck and arms also being worked properly.  Tension in these muscles is released and the spine is strengthened - this can help to ease back pain.

As well as improving your endurance, strengthening and toning the muscles in the upper body, arms and legs, and releasing muscle tension in the neck and shoulders, Nordic walking also provides an excellent cardiovascular workout.  You get your heart beating an average 5-17 times more per minute than normal walking.

Simply using poles means you consume about 20% more calories than normal walking, and if you combine this with the effects of walking faster, you can actually burn up to 46% more energy than when you walk normally, according to some research.

Many of these benefits can be put down to the use of poles. These improve your posture and help you to walk faster, by propelling your body forward thus increasing the length of your stride.
